OUR STORY
Valley Road Theatre Company was founded in 2022 to produce independent high school theatre productions. Our first season was dedicated to this goal—proscenium productions produced, directed, and performed entirely by high schoolers. In 2023, our debut production of Martin McDonagh's The Lieutenant of Inishmore (2023) played to sold-out audiences, followed by a site-specific production of Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard (2023), performed in a 19th-century chapel on the Long Island Sound.
Following a successful first season, Sophie Treadwell's Machinal (2024) was our first venture into immersive theatre and designed experiences. Before each performance, audience members explored the George H. Jones Company as the company performed scenes inspired by the play, rewarding each audience member with a different perspective to engage with Treadwell's text. That summer, we adapted Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" in Crypt (2024), an experience designed for a single audience member.
In our third season, the scale of VRTC productions skyrocketed. We began with No Darkness (2025), an experience inspired by George Orwell's "1984" and Nikolai Gogol's "The Overcoat." Invited to freely explore Joint Base Blair, the audience ventured across three floors and over thirty rooms of a colonial parish hall, creating an individual journey through the experience. Next, VRTC returned to the proscenium stage in a joint production with The Westchester Sandbox Theatre, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu (2025). Finishing the season, we transformed a nursery school for Winesburg (2025), an intimate experience for an audience of six, adapted from Sherwood Anderson's "Winesburg, Ohio."
In 2026, VRTC premiered our first collegiate production, Sheffield Scientific (2026). Set on the eve of nuclear armageddon, audiences were guided through a WWI-era bowling alley to experience the end of the world. We concluded the season with GILGAMESH SPACE MAN (2026), an epic adaptation of "The Epic of Gilgamesh" across the town of Larchmont, NY by foot, bike, and car for a single audience member.
In September 2026, VRTC will celebrate its fourth anniversary as we begin our fifth season of independent, experiential theatre.
